Why Connection Is More Important Than Strategies

When we introduce a new behaviour support strategy, we always pair it with this reminder:

For every strategy you roll out, aim for at least three moments of genuine connection.

Because strategy alone doesn’t create change, relationship does.

You can have the most beautifully written plan… but if the person doesn’t feel safe with you, seen by you, or respected by you, the strategy won’t stick.

So alongside visual prompts, sensory breaks, and co-regulation tools, we make space for:
-Warm greetings
-Moments of shared humour
-Noticing effort (not just outcomes)
-Giving choices
-Being present, not directive

PBS done well doesn’t just reduce behaviours, it builds trust.

Connection isn’t an “add-on.”
It’s the delivery method.
