Before You Choose A Modality, Choose To Connect

Common factors research has shown us again and again:
The most powerful ingredient in therapy isn’t the specific model you use, it’s the quality of the connection between therapist and client.

In fact, across hundreds of studies and modalities, the relationship accounts for more of the positive change than any single intervention.

Empathy. Trust. Attunement. Warmth.
These are the mechanisms of change.

The same applies in Positive Behaviour Support, counselling, social work, and support work.

Yes, our frameworks matter.
Yes, evidence-based practice is critical.
But without relationship, without real human connection, those strategies rarely land.

If someone doesn’t feel safe, seen, and respected by the person supporting them… it’s unlikely much else will stick.

So before we rush to update our tools, maybe the question is:
How are we showing up in relationship?
